    From: Jon Nolting [mailto:education@ussa.org]

    Dear ski racing parents,

The supporting role you play in your child’s ski racing enjoyment as success cannot be understated. It is an admittedly difficult task to understand all the ins and outs of the sport, from the best ways to develop young ski racers to selection methods, choosing which races to go to and knowing what equipment to buy.

While the list of questions is long, the time to get them answered is often short, and that is why we are offering free parent webinars for USSA parents to learn how to better support your child while gaining a better understanding of ski racing. A webinar will be offered for each region, so that you can ask questions specific to your area and get the answers you need. USSA Sport Education Director Jon Nolting will talk about sport parenting and ski racing development, and your regional alpine staff will give an overview of the programs in place in your area for your skiers. This will be followed with time for Q&A. Can’t make the live webinar? They will be recorded and made available online afterwards.

To join the webinar live or view the recorded versions go here

    Webinar schedule:
    Rocky/Central – Thursday, January 29, 10:30-11:30am MST
    East – Monday, February 2, Noon-1:00pm EST
    West – Wednesday, February 4, 1:00-2:00pm MST

We hope you’ll join us! If you have any questions, please contact USSA Sport Education.

    Sincerely,

    Jon Nolting
    USSA Director of Sport Education

As this last week unfolded, the final tally was in for Junior Olympics. Our strong CMAC team will be sending 13 kids to the U16 Junior Olympics in Jackson Wyoming. We have a very strong group of kids just outside the JO team that is improving quickly. I expect many of these kids to move in to the Junior Olympic level of skiing by next season. CMAC is on the move! I also think our kids have a strong chance to score podiums, top 10's and top 20's at the JO's!

The Crystal Mountain Founders' Club Board of Trustees has approved going forward with resuming the CMAC Scholarship Program for the 2014-15 season.

The Scholarship Program has been in existence for eleven years, starting in the Winter of 2003, and took a one year hiatus for the 2013-14 season. A total of $7,000 in scholarships will be awarded solely towards CMAC tuition expenses for each recipient. The program will be restricted to CMAC racers in the U16, U18 and U21 age categories for the 2014-15 ski season. Selections will be made by a four-person panel comprised of both CMFC and CMAC representatives. Applicants will be judged on several factors, including performance, demonstrated commitment and dedication, scholastic achievement and financial need.  Six scholarships will be available:

    $1,500 X 2 = $3,000

    $1,000 X 4 = $4,000

    TOTAL $7,000

The application form will be available to download beginning early February 2014 on either the CMFC (http://www.crystalfoundersclub.com/)  or CMAC (http://cmacskiracing.com/) websites. The application deadline will be May 1, 2014. To request further information, please contact Maureen Hammond, CMFC Scholarship Chair (Maureen@crystalfoundersclub.com).

UPDATE 2/14/2014: the application form is now available. Download it here

Good luck to all of the applicants!

This is it-- the moment you've all been waiting (and working so hard) for -- the Sallie McNabb Cup!  Although it is disappointing to see such a fantastic Mighty Mite Prep season end, we are excited for the race and BBQ this weekend.  Our hard working volunteers and staff have put together a great event and BBQ.  It will be a day to compete, watch others race, win awards, eat great food, thank your coaches, and socialize.  All family members are invited to attend.  Please read through the following notes carefully so that you can be prepared:

§  This event is the same format as any USSA Mighty Mite race. USSA membership is NOT required. ONLY MM Prep skiers can compete. Each Prep skier is already registered.

§  It will be a timed GS on Gold Hill with two runs.

§  Racers will need to check-in at the registration tables inside the main lodge between   7:30 - 8:15am to pick up your bib. Bibs must be returned at end of the day.

§  After you get your bib, go to Gold Hills lift for course inspection.

§  Meet with your coach at 8:30am at the bottom of Gold Hill Lift.  The coach will take you up for a course inspection. If you miss your coach just head up Gold Hills. The Gold Hills lift will begin running at 8:00 am. You can make warm up runs before meeting your coach, but please stay off of the course until inspection time.

§  Race order for first run:  U8 Girls, U8 Boys, U10 girls, U10 boys, U12 girls, U12 boys.

§  Race order for 2nd run:  U8 girls (but reversed order of run 1), U8 boys (reversed order), U10 girls (reversed), U10 boys (reversed)… etc.

§  Bathroom & snack breaks will vary depending on when you race. We suggest taking a quick break immediately after your first run. Parents, please coordinate a lunch plan with your racer. Since we can't estimate how long it will take for everyone to complete their first run, there is no set lunch time. Please check with a coach so you can be sure to be back in time for 2nd course inspection.  U12 Boys may want to inspect the 2nd course, and then take a break.

§  Awards will be given out to the top girls & boys in each age category (U8, U10, U12).  The Annual Sallie McNabb Overall Cup is given to the fastest boy and fastest girl of the day.

    The Schedule:

7:30-8:15 racers check in at lodge (please do not be late) and pick up your
    bibs.
8:15-8:30 racers meet coaches (at bottom of Gold Hills lift).
8:30-9:15 course inspection with your coach.
    9:30 Race begins!
2nd course inspection is immediately after the first run ends and course is reset.

2nd Run starts one hour after the end of first run.

The Coaches' Challenge race starts immediately after 2nd run ends. Your Prep
coaches will compete against each other in a quick one-run challenge for
bragging rights after all the kids have made their second run.  Be sure to stick around to watch the coaches compete!

BBQ and awards at the Alpine Inn immediately after the Coaches' Challenge race, (around 2:30 pm).  There is no cost for the BBQ, it is included in your tuition.

COSTUMES:  It is a Hawaiian theme so wear your brightest Hawaiian shirts, lei’s, or just dress up with something fun, crazy or colorful -- costumes, face paint, anything!   Parents can join in the fun too!

The course will be set on Gold Hill similar to our training courses, so no need to be nervous. Just do your best and HAVE FUN!

Parents, we need a few strong skiers to slip the course between racers to smooth out the ruts. We are expecting a lot of new, soft snow, and therefore expect big ruts!  Please check in with me or the start officials anytime during the race to see if we need you to slip.

    Other notes:

If you are interested in more racing, please check our website for spring Mighty Mite race schedule.  USSA membership is required for these other races. Please contact me if you are considering additional races this year.

Mark your calendars for our Annual CMAC Awards Banquet which will be in May in

Seattle .  Annual awards are given to Prep kids also!

Talk with your coach if you are considering moving to full season mighty
mites next year. We'll be glad to discuss this with you.

We are all looking forward to seeing you on Saturday. It will be a great
    event!

     Stay Tuned!

     Director, CMAC Mighty Mite Prep
